Product details

Surface treatment is the process of forming a surface layer on a part that differs from the substrate in mechanical, physical and chemical properties. Its purpose is to meet the wear resistance, corrosion resistance, decoration or other special functional requirements of the product. Dimensions and tolerances of some high-precision parts fully meet the requirements of drawings during machining, but after surface treatment, tolerances exceed the requirements of drawings due to the thickness of the treatment layer, etc. Therefore, this paper lists the features of surface treatment of aluminum parts by oxidation and the control range of part dimensions and tolerances during surface treatment.

Anodizing, the dimensions and tolerances of the parts does not change during and after the whole surface treatment process. Dimensional tolerance control during machining shall be as required by drawing marking.

Thick oxidation, strictly speaking the surface treatment method should be thicker after completion, the shaft diameter increases, the pore diameter decreases, and the unilateral thickness of dimension increases by about 0.01mm. But the actual dimension measurement data before and after surface treatment, the dimension and tolerance basically do not change. In actual production, the dimension and tolerance of thick and thick parts treated by oxidation are carried out per the method of anodization, while the dimension and tolerance control during processing are carried out as per the requirements of drawing marking.

Hard anodizing, the thickness will be increased as per the requirements of the drawing after the whole surface treatment. For example drawings require hard oxidation with 30MM, then the flat side of part will be increased by 0.015mm on one side, the shaft diameter will be increased by 0.03mm and the hole diameter will be reduced by 0.03mm. In actual machining, the dimension and tolerance for the part should be reserved as per the surface treatment thickness required on the drawing. In hard oxidized parts, for part aperture that drawings will require protection during surface treatment, so thickness is not considered in part processing at this time. When the blind hole is in the state, the hard oxidation process has little influence on the pore size, so the problem of thickness increase can be ignored.

Regardless of oxidation, parts should be prepared for pre-processing to avoid the dimension of the final product exceeding the tolerance range. The above sharing is expected to be helpful to engineers.
